The SBU Has Set Its Sights On Russian Chief Of The General Staff Gerasimov
Valery Gerasimov

An investigation has been launched into the Russian general.

The Security Service and the Office of the Prosecutor General have opened a criminal investigation into alleged war crimes committed by the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces Valery Gerasimov.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine citing a statement from the SBU.

According to the investigation, the Russian general is implicated in organizing massive missile and air strikes on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure.

He is also accused of being responsible for the airstrike on Kyiv and the surrounding region on July 2, 2026. As is well known, this attack claimed the lives of dozens of people.

The SBU notes that the Russian military regularly uses X-type missiles, “Kinzhal,” “Kalibr,” “Iskander,” “Zircon,” as well as Shahed/“Geran” strike drones.

Investigators believe that it is precisely on Gerasimov’s orders that airstrikes on Ukrainian territory are planned and carried out. Strategic aviation, missile-carrying ships, and ground-based operational-tactical missile systems are also involved in the commission of war crimes.

The SBU notes that systematic attacks on civilian targets violate the norms of international humanitarian law, in particular the provisions of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions.

Based on the evidence gathered, law enforcement officials are investigating Gerasimov’s actions under Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine—violation of the laws and customs of war, including orders to commit such crimes.

The pretrial investigation is ongoing under the procedural supervision of the Office of the Prosecutor General.
