Europe needs to make a choice.

One of the leaders of the Russian opposition, former world chess champion Garry Kasparov, believes that the war in Ukraine will end sooner if Europe openly declares that Ukraine must win and Russia must lose. In his view, such a statement would be immediately followed by practical steps that would bring an end to the hostilities closer. But European leaders so far cannot even conceive of Russia’s defeat: they believe it would result in a massive catastrophe.

The Russian opposition figure outlined his vision in an interview with the YouTube channel “Free Russia Forum”. He attributes Moscow’s current audacity to impunity: “Today, Russia is acting defiantly because it faces no consequences. I’m watching as Lavrov arrives at the G20 summit, smug and well-fed. Of course, they’re boycotting him there and pointedly ignoring him. If Europe were bolder, it wouldn’t have gone to this summit at all. “I’d be curious to see Trump sitting there alone with Lavrov. We need to show that this is unacceptable, but they’re still looking for some kind of compromise,” Kasparov says indignantly.

The politician also explained exactly what Europe should do: “There’s no clear message. It would be enough to say one difficult phrase: ‘Ukraine must win, and Russia must lose.’ But there’s no such formula. The words ‘Ukraine must win’ are uttered with great difficulty, and the idea that Russia must lose is completely unthinkable to them—the world would collapse. They insist: ‘Let’s negotiate.’ “What is there to negotiate?”
