The United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan have signed a $6.14 billion contract to continue the joint development of a new-generation fighter jet, according to The Japan Times.
The project is led by Edgewing, a joint venture established specifically for this purpose, headquartered in the United Kingdom and headed by an Italian specialist. The consortium includes defense industry giants: Britain’s BAE Systems, Italy’s Leonardo, and Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
The collaboration will result in a twin-engine, sixth-generation stealth fighter. The developers plan for the aircraft to enter combat service by 2035 as a multi-role airborne command post equipped with artificial intelligence and “directed-energy weapons.” The new fighter will be about 20–21 meters long and feature a distinctive wide wing. In terms of size, it will be comparable to the heavy American F-15.
The aircraft will be capable of supersonic speeds and climbing to an altitude of nearly 20 kilometers. Its planned range on a single refueling will exceed 1,500 kilometers, enabling it to operate effectively in the Indo-Pacific region and the North Atlantic. The fighter’s payload capacity will be twice that of the F-35A, with all weapons concealed in internal bays to ensure stealth. The aircraft is planned to be equipped with electronic warfare systems, advanced radars, and high-power microwave weapons.
The cockpit will resemble a flying command center. Neural networks will integrate data from all sensors, and information will be displayed via augmented reality. In addition, an open software architecture will make it easy to update the aircraft’s systems and integrate unmanned aerial vehicles into combat operations, which the fighter will be able to control during combat.
