Syrian Dictator Bashar Al-Assad Has Been Sentenced To Death

The court rendered its decision in absentia.

On August 11, a Syrian court sentenced the country’s former president Bashar al-Assad to death in absentia. This was reported by Al Arabiya.

The court found Bashar al-Assad guilty of “war crimes” and “crimes against humanity” committed during the country’s civil war.

This is the first such verdict against members of the former government under the new regime.

As a reminder, former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who had been in power for a long time, was overthrown by rebels in December 2024 following a 13-year civil war. He subsequently fled to Russia with his family.

In October 2025, the German newspaper Die Zeit reported that Bashar al-Assad is living with his family in “Moscow City”. They own at least 19 apartments there.
