The Hungarian Parliament Has Elected András Baku As The New President

He previously served as chief justice of the country's Supreme Court.

On Tuesday, the Hungarian National Assembly voted to elect 73-year-old lawyer and former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court András Baku as the new president of the republic, according to Telex.

140 deputies voted in favor of appointing Baka as Hungary’s new president, while 6 voted against. The former ruling coalition, Fidesz-KDNP, had previously announced that it would not participate in the vote.

From 1991 to 2008, András Baka served at the European Court of Human Rights. After that, in 2009, the lawyer became president of the Hungarian Supreme Court. His tenure lasted two years, as he was dismissed following a constitutional reform. Baka himself believes that his dismissal was linked to his criticism of the judicial reform pushed by Viktor Orbán’s government.
