Doctors: A Glass Of Cherry Juice Extends Sleep By Half An Hour

There are two key components in the berries.

Chronic sleep deprivation isn’t just a cause of morning fatigue—it’s a serious risk factor for diabetes, obesity, and heart problems. Traditionally, warm milk or chamomile tea are recommended to combat sleep disorders, but experts suggest a more enjoyable and scientifically proven alternative: natural cherry juice. This is reported by Martha Stewart, as noted by “Cursor”.

Why Cherries Help You Fall Asleep

Experts—specifically, Dr. Melissa Mroz-Planells and nutritionist Lauren Manaker

—point to two key components in the berries:

Natural melatonin. Cherries are one of the few foods that naturally contain this hormone, which is directly responsible for regulating the body’s circadian rhythms.

Proanthocyanidins. These powerful antioxidants from the polyphenol group protect cells from oxidative stress and, most importantly for sleep, increase the availability of tryptophan—the substance from which the body synthesizes serotonin and melatonin.

What the Research Shows

According to scientific studies, regular consumption of cherry juice has a measurable effect: participants’ total sleep time increased by an average of 34 minutes, time spent in bed increased by 25 minutes, and sleep efficiency improved by 5–6%.

The effect was particularly pronounced in people with severe chronic insomnia: in one study, they slept an average of 62 minutes longer, and the number of nighttime awakenings decreased significantly.

How to Drink Juice for Maximum Benefit

Nutritionists recommend following a few rules:

Choose only 100% natural, freshly squeezed juice with no additives;

avoid sugar and preservatives—they negate the health benefits and may, on the contrary, cause an energy spike;
if fresh berries aren’t available, use natural cherry concentrate diluted with water.

Additional Benefits

In addition to its effects on sleep, cherries are rich in pigments with strong antioxidant properties: they help reduce inflammation, support joint health, and speed up the body’s recovery after physical activity.
