In Moscow, An Ambulance Struck A Top Executive At A Major Bank
Dmitry Larin

He died at the scene.

Dmitry Larin , deputy chairman of the board of Genbank , was killed in Moscow. According to preliminary reports, he was riding a motorcycle when an ambulance veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with him.

Russian media are publishing footage from the scene of the accident: a mangled motorcycle lies on the road, an ambulance is parked nearby, and the victim’s body, covered with a black tarp, is located approximately 10 meters from the site of the accident.

Larina’s death has been added to a whole string of deaths of high-ranking Russian officials and top executives under circumstances that remain unclear to this day—recently, the number of such cases has exceeded twenty.

What makes this news particularly noteworthy is the nature of Genbank’s operations. The financial institution was used for transactions involving Crimea following its annexation; its headquarters were located in Simferopol, and the bank itself fell under international sanctions precisely because of its activities in the occupied territory.

After 2014, “Genbank” became one of the key elements of Russia’s financial infrastructure on the peninsula: while major federal banks avoided full-scale operations in Crimea due to sanctions risks, institutions such as Genbank took on the responsibility of serving local businesses, the general public, and government operations.

It is precisely this context that has made the news particularly resonant on social media—users are already quipping that “the most effective sanctions were imposed by the ambulance service.” Formally, this was just a routine traffic accident, but the death of a manager at a sanctioned bank involved in providing financial services to occupied Crimea quickly became a source of dark humor online.
