It was a stroke of luck that led to the discovery.
Scientists discovered a previously unknown species of blind cavefish after they stumbled upon an amateur viral video on a popular social media platform. This was reported by "Hi-Tech".
A group of ichthyologists from India’s National Institute of Biodiversity took notice of a short video that a villager had filmed while cleaning a deep well in the state of Kerala. In the footage, the man showed tiny, wriggling creatures of a bright pink color that resembled ordinary earthworms or thin snakes. The scientists were unable to identify the animals from the video alone and immediately organized an expedition to the site to collect live specimens.

Anatomical analysis and DNA sequencing confirmed that the creatures belong to a completely new species of fish, which has been officially named Gangaichthys indonepalicus. Millions of years of evolution in the complete darkness of isolated aquifers have radically altered the appearance of these animals. The fish have completely lost their eyes, scales, and swim bladder, and their bones have become nearly transparent, allowing blood vessels to show clearly through their skin.
Biologists emphasize that without a chance social media post, this species might have remained hidden from science forever, as its habitat is limited to hard-to-reach underground aquifers at depths of tens of meters. This new discovery clearly demonstrates that user-generated content on the internet is becoming a powerful tool for modern scientists and helps them quickly locate rare species in the planet’s most isolated ecosystems.
