It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Germany.

One of Germany's most popular tourist attractions—Neuschwanstein Castle (Schloss Neuschwanstein)—has surpassed the 75-million-visitor mark. This was reported by the Bavarian State Administration of Palaces, Gardens, and Lakes (Bayerische Verwaltung der staatlichen Schlösser, Gärten und Seen).

Neuschwanstein Castle—75 Million Visitors

The 75-millionth visitor was a 38-year-old woman from Baden-Württemberg. The guest was greeted with flowers and presented with an annual family pass to visit all of Bavaria’s state-owned palaces and castles—a total of nearly sixty architectural landmarks and other historical sites.

In addition to Neuschwanstein, these sites include, among others, Linderhof Palace (Schloss Linderhof), the New Palace at Herrenchiemsee (Neues Schloss Herrenchiemsee), the Würzburg Residence (Residenz Würzburg), and the Imperial Castle at the Nuremberg Fortress (Kaiserburg Nürnberg). The total number of visitors to all these attractions is nearly five million people per year.

Neuschwanstein Castle is located in southern Germany, in Bavaria. It is situated approximately 120 kilometers from Munich, near the small town of Füssen.

How many tourists visit Neuschwanstein

Neuschwanstein Castle, which welcomes about 1.1 million visitors annually, is the most popular attraction managed by the state agency under the Bavarian State Ministry of Finance.

According to the ministry, more than 70 percent of Neuschwanstein’s visitors currently come from abroad. Last year, this castle and other residences of King Ludwig II (Ludwig II.) were designated UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The castle was first opened to the public on August 1, 1886—shortly after Ludwig II’s death. The one-million-visitor mark per year was first surpassed in 1980. The record to date remains from 2014—approximately 1.57 million people.

The castle, whose construction began by order of Ludwig II in 1868 and was never completed, is considered the world’s foremost architectural monument of the Historicist era.
