Former Vice President Of Liberia Arrested For Drug Trafficking

Jewel Howard-Taylor served as vice president from 2018 to 2024.

Jewel Howard-Taylor, who served as Vice President of Liberia from 2018 to 2024, has been arrested as part of an international investigation into drug trafficking. This was reported by The Times citing Liberian officials.

According to their statement, Ms. Howard-Taylor was arrested on August 19 while en route to the international airport in the capital, Monrovia. She spent the night at a police station. She has now been charged with drug trafficking.

The newspaper notes that in July of this year, Liberian authorities announced the seizure of 4 metric tons of cocaine—worth $317 million—that was intended for shipment to Europe. According to experts, the very fact that such a large quantity of drugs is present in the country indicates Liberia’s growing role in the global drug trade.

The country’s authorities have already stated that the arrested woman will not receive special treatment. “There will be no selective justice, no political protection, no ‘sacred cows,’ and no compromises in the fight against organized crime,” the newspaper quotes a government statement as saying.

Howard-Taylor is the ex-wife of Charles Taylor, one of the country’s major field commanders during the civil war (1989–1996), who served as the country’s president from 1997 to 2003. He is currently serving a 50-year prison sentence in a British prison for war crimes. Ms. Howard-Taylor has repeatedly stated that she knew nothing about her husband’s crimes.
