Europe Is Distancing Itself From FIFA Because Of Infantino

UEFA and CONCACAF are discussing the creation of a joint Nations League.

UEFA has begun negotiations with CONCACAF regarding the expansion of the Nations League, which would allow national teams from North and Central America, as well as the Caribbean, to participate in the tournament. The change could take effect as early as the 2028–29 season, according to The Independent.

The talks signal a strengthening of cooperation between the two confederations and the development of international tournaments without FIFA’s direct involvement. The Asian Football Confederation is also expected to join the dialogue, though its potential participation will be considered at a later stage.

At the same time, the expanded tournament should not require additional windows in the international calendar. The group stage is planned for the fall of 2028, with the knockout matches scheduled for March and June of the following year.

The negotiations are taking place amid mounting pressure on FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The heads of UEFA Alexander Čeferin and CONCACAF Viktor Montagliani believe that Infantino should resign rather than seek another term.

Montagliani is seen as one of the potential candidates for the FIFA presidency. In the coming days, he may meet with Infantino at a youth soccer event in the Dominican Republic. Some Caribbean federations have already publicly expressed their support for the current FIFA president.
The dismissal of FIFA’s chief operating officer Kevin Lamour has become an additional source of tension. Shortly before that, he had publicly criticized Infantino over a failed plan to bring in private investors to manage the World Cup and other projects of the organization.

Against this backdrop, the Nations League is becoming not only a sporting project but also a tool for the major soccer confederations to exert influence.
