The EU Is Allocating €6.1 Billion To Ukraine For Weapons And Air Defense Systems

The funds will be used to purchase missiles, ammunition, and radar stations.

Today, August 24, on Ukraine’s Independence Day, the European Commission approved the allocation of 6.1 billion euros as part of a 90-billion-euro EU loan for Ukraine.

As reports the European Commission’s press service, the funds will be used for air and missile defense systems, missiles, ammunition, and radar stations.

It is noted that today’s approval of the funds by the European Commission supplements previously approved plans totaling 16 billion euros, of which 8.35 billion euros have already been allocated to Ukraine.

“Today we approved 6.1 billion euros for air and missile defense systems, missiles, ammunition, and radar stations, which Ukraine urgently needs. As Russia intensifies its attacks, we are stepping up our efforts to help Ukraine protect its people and defend its airspace. Europe stands in solidarity with Ukraine, and we will provide it with what it needs, when it needs it,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The European Commission’s press office added that most of the purchases will be made from EU defense companies. Given Russia’s active use of ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones, the European Commission emphasized the need to significantly increase supplies from the EU by drawing down stockpiles, reevaluating procurement priorities, and ramping up production.
