Mikalaj Statkevich Congratulated Ukrainians On Independence Day

Mikalaj Statkevich Congratulated Ukrainians On Independence Day
Mikalaj Statkevich

Hang in there, friends!

A leader of the Belarusian opposition, former political prisoner Mikalai Statkevich congratulated Ukrainians on Independence Day:

— My sincere congratulations on Independence Day to the noble and courageous Ukrainian people!

Right now, you are forced to wage a bloody and unequal war for independence, during which many thousands of you have perished, in which not only your soldiers on the front lines, but also civilians—children, women, and the elderly—in every region of Ukraine face the constant threat of death.

Your courage and resilience in defending your country’s independence and freedom command the respect and admiration of the entire world. This is especially true among your neighboring nations, who understand that, should you be defeated, their own countries will be the next targets of Moscow’s aggression. That is precisely why many patriots from these countries have come to Ukraine to fight alongside you against the aggressor.

I am deeply ashamed that Belarus was used by the aggressors as a springboard for an attempt to quickly seize your capital. I am convinced that, regardless of this seizure and the swift victory, the aggressor would not have embarked on this bloody adventure at all.

Unfortunately, the people, worn down by years of resistance against the dictatorship, the imprisonment of many thousands of patriots, and the deliberate coercion of hundreds of thousands of the regime’s workers into emigration prior to the war, Belarusian society was unable to prevent our land from being used for aggression against the people closest to us. Please forgive me, my brothers and sisters!

On this festive day for you, I wish you the strength to stand firm and preserve your wonderful country! For yourselves and for all peoples who yearn for freedom.

Many times, locked in a concrete prison cell, I prayed to God for this. My heart is with you.

Hang in there, friends!
