The EU Is Considering About 1,600 "candidates" For A New Package Of Sanctions Against Russia

The EU is discussing the details of a new package of sanctions against Russia; approximately 1,600 individuals and entities could be added to the sanctions lists.

According to three European diplomats, the new package of sanctions against Russia will be discussed at a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, which will take place next Tuesday and Wednesday in Ireland.

One of the diplomats says that there are about 1,600 “candidates” for the list—800 individuals and 800 legal entities. The package is expected to be adopted in mid-October.

Another source reported that the use of frozen Russian assets is once again under discussion—although this again means Belgium must be persuaded, as it fears legal consequences.

All three diplomats note that, overall, this involves a significant expansion of existing sanctions.

As previously reported, Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga will also attend the meeting of EU foreign ministers.
