Lithuania And Latvia Recalled The Revolution In Belarus

Belarus's neighboring countries have shown their support for the Belarusian people.

Lithuania and Latvia issued statements marking the 6th anniversary of the start of the revolution in Belarus.

The foreign ministries of both countries published the statements.

In Riga, officials noted that on August 9, 2020, Belarusians began protesting against the rigged elections in which Alexander Lukashenko was declared the winner, but lost to the regime and its repressive apparatus.

“Six years later, the Lukashenko regime continues its repressive policies, including transnational repression against Belarusians in exile. The number of political prisoners continues to rise, and even more people are being arbitrarily detained on charges of ‘extremism,’” the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted.

They also noted that Belarus has since launched a hybrid campaign against its European neighbors, using illegal migration for this purpose, and has become an accomplice in Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.
“We strongly condemn these inhumane actions and call on Belarus to immediately cease them. Latvia supports the Belarusian people in their aspiration to live in a free, democratic, and sovereign Belarus,” the statement reads.

“Belarus remains deprived of freedom, and the Lukashenko regime supports Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and participates in hybrid attacks against neighboring countries. Lithuania stands firmly with the Belarusian people and their right to a free, democratic, sovereign, and independent Belarus,” said Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kęstutis Budrys.
