A Well-known Belarusian Hacker Was Sentenced To A Long Prison Term In The U.S.

He began his criminal career in the cyber world back in 2005.

Belarusian Maksim Silnikov received a lengthy prison sentence in the U.S. for cybercrimes. Details of his case were disclosed by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Silnikov is currently 40 years old, and he began his criminal career in the cyber realm back in 2005. He is accused of involvement in the cybercrime marketplace Direct Connection between 2011 and 2016.

According to the case file, in 2021, Silnikov decided to create his own ransomware program, which he named Ransom Cartel.

“Silnikov launched operations to distribute ransomware and began recruiting members on forums dedicated to cybercrime. On various occasions, Silnikov distributed information among Ransom Cartel members, including details about compromised computers—such as stolen login credentials—as well as tools designed to encrypt or lock compromised computers,” the prosecutor’s office reported.

Using this program, the Belarusian and his accomplices attacked at least 18 companies worldwide, including businesses in California, New York, Nebraska, and other states. The hackers stole company data and demanded ransom payments—either for the key to unlock the stolen information or for a promise not to publish it.

The group operated until July 2023, when Silnikov was arrested in Poland. He was subsequently extradited to the United States, where his trial took place.

Silnikov was sentenced to 16 years in prison for cybercrimes.
