She died two days after the funeral of her brother, King Harald V.
Norwegian Princess Astrid, the sister of the recently deceased King Harald V, has died at the age of 94, the Norwegian Royal House announced.
“His Majesty the King received the news of Princess Astrid’s passing with deep sorrow. The princess died today, Friday, September 11, at the age of 94,” the obituary states.
The cause and circumstances of her death were not specified.
Her nephew, Norway’s new King Haakon VIII, noted that she always showed “special care and attention to the most vulnerable members of society.” According to him, the queen was “very dedicated and always carried out her duties with devotion, confidence, and infectious enthusiasm.”
Her brother, King Harald V of Norway, died on August 28 at the age of 90.
Eleven days before his death, he was admitted to the hospital due to fluid retention, and his condition later worsened due to a bacterial infection in his bloodstream.
Princess Astrid was born on February 12, 1932, in Oslo. She was the second daughter of the future King Olav V of Norway and Crown Princess Martha.
After Germany’s invasion of Norway in 1940, she left the country with her mother, sister, and brother: the family first went to Sweden and then to the United States, where they lived until the end of World War II.
After returning to Norway, Astrid studied political history and socioeconomic disciplines at Oxford.
After her mother’s death in 1954, 22-year-old Astrid became Norway’s first lady and performed representative duties alongside her father. She held this role until 1968, when her brother Harald married Sone Haraldsen. In 1961, Astrid married businessman Johan Martin Ferner. The couple had five children. Ferner died in 2015.
The princess also headed the memorial foundation dedicated to her mother, Crown Princess Martha.
