A 67-year-old female patient had a new valve implanted inside her old prosthesis.

Doctors at the Minsk Republican Scientific and Practical Center “Cardiology” performed the first procedure of its kind in Belarus, implanting a new heart valve into a 67-year-old woman inside an old prosthesis that had been installed many years ago. This was reported by the medical center.

Back in 1984, the woman underwent heart surgery in Moscow, during which special support rings were placed on two heart valves—the mitral and tricuspid valves.

More than 40 years have passed, and one of the rings—on the tricuspid valve—has failed. As a result, her heart stopped pumping blood normally; she developed severe heart failure, and her pulmonary artery pressure rose sharply.

Due to the extremely high risk of repeat cardiac surgery (comorbidities, high pulmonary artery pressure), the valve defect was corrected using a radiological endovascular technique—that is, through a small puncture in a blood vessel, without open surgery or opening the chest cavity.
