They will last a month.

On Thursday, the Lithuanian Armed Forces will begin the “Grom Perkūno – 2026” national defense exercises to test the readiness of the military and government agencies to transition from peacetime to a state of crisis and martial law.

This was reported by LRT.

The exercises will last until October 15. During the exercises, the readiness of the Lithuanian Army’s headquarters and units to carry out the tasks outlined in the national defense plans will be assessed, as well as their coordination with NATO allies.

As part of the exercises, the activation of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Strategic Command will be practiced, along with coordination of actions with the NATO Joint Force Command in Brünsum, the Ministry of the Interior services, the National Crisis Management Center, and local municipalities.

Military personnel will practice responding to asymmetric and hybrid threats, strengthening the protection of borders and critical infrastructure, activating rapid-response forces, and carrying out mobilization procedures. The exercise will also test the reinforcement of army units with active reserve personnel.

The Lithuanian exercises will be conducted in conjunction with NATO’s Steadfast Duel 2026 maneuvers. At the national level, they will be synchronized with other exercises by the Lithuanian Armed Forces and government agencies.

In September and October, approximately 4,200 Lithuanian service members will participate in the exercises, and up to 2,400 active reserve personnel will be called up to various units.

During the exercises, military command posts will also be activated, and their coordination with army units and other agencies will be tested.
