Nikolai Statkevich: Yesterday, I Felt Both Happy And Sad At The Same Time

The opposition leader explained why only 25 political prisoners were released.

Belarusian opposition leader and former political prisoner Nikolai Statkevich commented on the release of 25 political prisoners on his Telegram channel. He admitted that he was glad to see these people released, but noted that he had expected a more significant outcome from the negotiations with the U.S. side.

— Like many Belarusians, yesterday I was pleased by the release of another group of political prisoners and disappointed that, instead of the large number promised by a U.S. administration representative, only 25 people were released.

To be honest, this was the expected outcome. Because a key rule of trade was violated—one that not only “deal-makers” but also any ordinary buyer should know. If you’re buying a certain product and start publicly expressing your interest in purchasing a large quantity of it in advance, the seller will automatically raise the price of that product.

I understand that Mr. Cole said what thousands of Belarusians were eagerly waiting to hear from him, but when you’re dealing with a born (literally) trader, it’s worth anticipating his reaction to your words.
