After a Putin-aligned oligarch paid for the wedding reception.
The story about the wedding party of Donald Trump Jr. , which was paid for by a Russian businessman close to Vladimir Putin, may have far more serious consequences for the U.S. president’s son than just a public scandal. This is reported by The Guardian.
The publication provides details of the scandal, which had already been reported earlier. At the center of the story is Umar Kremlev—president of the International Boxing Association and a man whom the media link to Putin’s political and business circles. According to a journalistic investigation, he paid for two days of post-wedding celebrations for Trump Jr. and his wife Bettina, specifically the rental of a private island for the newlyweds and their guests, as well as fireworks.
Shortly before the event, Kremlinov accompanied Vladimir Putin on his trip to China.
However, as The Guardian notes, it is not the cost of the event itself that raises the most questions, but rather the nature of the ties between the Kremlin and Trump Jr. and his role in the U.S. president’s political inner circle.
Trump Jr. remains a prominent figure in his father’s inner circle. The author of the article points out that he played an important role in the selection of J.D. Vance as the vice-presidential candidate in 2024, and also served as a political adviser to Donald Trump. According to reports, he helped determine the nominations of some members of the president’s administration.
This is precisely why it is noteworthy that Kremlev has effectively found himself in the inner circle of a man who wields significant influence over American politics.
While the Trump family is trying to portray the situation as a purely private matter unrelated to politics, the issue has already entered the political arena. Democrats in the House of Representatives, who are simultaneously investigating the president’s family’s enrichment during his time in office, sent a letter to Trump Jr. In it, they described the situation as potentially very serious.
Congressman Robert Garcia stated that the expensive and obscure gifts given to the sitting president’s son by a person in Putin’s inner circle raise “serious questions regarding national security and corruption in government.”
Garcia emphasized Trump Jr.’s political role. “Given that you reportedly advise your father, the President of the United States, on matters of national security and vetting of White House candidates, any potential foreign influence warrants thorough scrutiny,” the letter states, which the Democrat sent to the president’s son.
Donald Trump himself stated that he had never heard of Kremlev as a close friend of his son’s. At the same time, a congressional investigation could shift this story from the realm of family affairs to that of Trump Jr.’s political connections.
“While we wait to see how this unfolds, there is an important lesson for all of us: no matter how tempting a Russian oligarch’s offer to help pay for napkins, forks, and knives may be, people may have some questions—especially if your father is the president of the United States,” concludes The Guardian.
