Washington Airport Suspended Operations Due To An Unknown Object Over The Runway

The FBI has launched an investigation into this incident.

On Wednesday, September 16, flights at Ronald Reagan National Airport in Washington were suspended for about 20 minutes after two pilots spotted a drone over the runway.

This was reported by CNN citing information from the Federal Aviation Administration.

“We saw something like a drone or something similar fly by—probably somewhere in the middle of the runway,” — reported the pilot of an American Airlines regional jet, who was landing after a flight from Tulsa, over the radio to the control tower.

Another pilot, awaiting departure for New Jersey, also reported a light source that he believed could have been a drone.

The air traffic controller warned other pilots about “unauthorized UAV activity,” after which flights were suspended.

Airport staff searched for the drone but did not find it. Local and federal authorities were notified of the incident.

The FBI is investigating the incident. Federal charges could result in up to one year in prison and fines of up to $100,000.

The use of drones is prohibited in most of the airspace around Washington, D.C.

Reagan National Airport is located near the White House, the Capitol, and the Pentagon.
