Andrzej Pochołat Met With U.S. Special Representative John Cole

The issue of the next mission to secure the release of political prisoners in Belarus was discussed.

Former political prisoner Andrzej Pochoebut met in the U.S. with the U.S. President's Special Representative for Belarus John Cole. Andrzej Pochoebut wrote about this on his Facebook page.

Poczobut and Cole discussed issues concerning the Polish diaspora in our country, the Union of Poles, political prisoners. They also discussed ways to improve the situation in Belarus.

“I am grateful for Cole’s efforts to secure my release and that of other political prisoners. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for his mission and his next visit to Belarus,” Pochobut wrote.

As a reminder, Pochobut was detained in March 2021 and, in February 2023, was sentenced to eight years in a maximum-security prison on charges that included, among other things, “inciting hostility” and “calls for actions against state security.” Human rights activists recognized him as a political prisoner.

On April 28, 2026, he was released as part of a prisoner exchange between Belarus and Poland.

On September 8, 2026, Pochobut traveled to Belarus via the “Bobrovniki” border crossing and returned to Poland a week later.

As human rights activists emphasize, despite this trip, returning to Belarus remains dangerous for many.
