The European Union is developing a set of restrictions to prevent athletes from Russia and Belarus from participating in international competitions.

The European Union is holding consultations on possible measures to prevent athletes from Russia and Belarus from returning to international competitions, according to Euractiv reports, citing diplomatic sources.

The discussion intensified following the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) to temporarily lift the ban on the two countries’ National Olympic Committees, potentially paving the way for them to host the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

According to the publication, the initiative is currently contained in an unofficial document and has not been formalized as a public proposal by the European Commission.

Among the measures under discussion are the imposition of personal sanctions and visa restrictions on individuals associated with Russian and Belarusian sports.

Also under consideration are cuts to funding for organizations that allow athletes to compete under national symbols, restrictions on media revenue, and appeals to third countries not to facilitate the integration of these athletes.
