Trump Urged Zelensky To Reach An Agreement With Putin To End The War Before Winter Sets In

The White House chief assured that the parties are “ready for negotiations.”

U.S. President Donald Trump called on Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy to begin negotiations with Vladimir Putin and end the war before winter sets in. “You know what I want from him (the President of Ukraine—Ed.)? I want him to reach an agreement. I want him to work things out with Putin, and for Putin to work things out with him,” Trump said in a conversation with reporters. According to him, tens of thousands of people are dying every month in the war between Russia and Ukraine. “Most of them are military personnel—97% are military. But whether they’re military or civilians, just think about this: two months ago, 32,000 [died]; last month, 33,000; and this month, 25,000 people,” Trump noted.

The White House chief assured that Zelenskyy and Putin are ready for negotiations. “Someday—hopefully in the near future, hopefully before the harsh winter sets in—they will reach an agreement,” Trump said. Prior to that, the U.S. president held a meeting with the Ukrainian leader on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. According to sources familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg, he suggested that Zelenskyy travel to Moscow to meet with Putin. Zelenskyy declined the offer. Sources familiar with the matter told the agency that the Ukrainian leader was upset that Trump had urged him to travel to the Russian capital. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian president’s office denied that the White House had made such a proposal.

The Kremlin has previously stated on multiple occasions that a meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy is possible only in Moscow. “Our position is well known. Putin said that Zelenskyy, if he wishes, can come to Moscow. The necessary security guarantees will be provided to him,” said Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov. Putin himself reported in June of this year that Zelenskyy had asked him for a face-to-face meeting through a Russian businessman. Putin emphasized that he is not refusing to negotiate, but does not want to “shift from one empty promise to another.”

Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, VGTRK correspondent Valentin Bogdanov tried to ask Zelenskyy when he would visit Moscow. The Ukrainian president initially ignored him, but then replied: “On a rocket”.
