U.S. Ambassador: Trump Suggested To Xi Jinping That He Buy American Weapons

The White House has denied this information.

U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that Chinese leader Xi Jinping buy American weapons. This was stated in a television interview by U.S. Ambassador to China David Perdue, according to The New York Times.

“President Trump constantly says, ‘Look, we sell weapons to other countries all over the world.’ At one point, he even asked Chairman Xi if he’d like to buy anything,” the diplomat said.

The ambassador did not provide any details or reveal how Xi Jinping reacted.

This unexpected statement came during an interview about U.S. policy toward Taiwan. The island has been waiting for several months for Trump to approve a new $14 billion arms deal. Earlier, in December of last year, a record-breaking multibillion-dollar deal was announced.

Doubts about how determined Trump is to defend Taiwan have arisen before. At a meeting with Xi in Beijing in May, he stated that he was postponing a decision on the $14 billion package, calling it “a very good bargaining chip” in negotiations with China.

However, the Trump administration denied the ambassador’s remarks. A U.S. administration spokesperson stated that Washington has no plans to sell weapons to China. A State Department statement said: “U.S. law prohibits the sale of weapons to China; there are no proposals or plans to sell weapons to China.”
