NATO Secretary General On Russian Casualties In Ukraine: "These Numbers Are Enormous"

Russia is losing 40,000 soldiers killed or seriously wounded in Ukraine every month. This was stated by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

Following a meeting with Lithuanian Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius in Brussels, Rutte commented on Russia’s hostile actions on the territory of Alliance countries, as well as the situation on the front lines in Ukraine.

“These numbers are staggering. This is undoubtedly terrible news for their families. However, they also show that we are dealing with a president who is willing to sacrifice 1.2 million of his own citizens in a completely unjustified aggression against Ukraine. Therefore, the best response to all actions in the gray zone where Russia operates must be greater—not less—support for Ukraine, since ultimately their goal is to divide us,” said the NATO Secretary General.

Mark Rutte stated that the allies are recording flights by Russian drones over Alliance member states, as well as acts of sabotage and cyberattacks. He added that NATO has “all the necessary means of response, which will not always be visible to the public and will not always be symmetrical in nature.”

As an example, Mark Rutte cited the incident in late 2025 when a submarine cable between Finland and Estonia was damaged. In response, NATO launched Operation Baltic Sentry, aimed at protecting key undersea infrastructure.
