A Chagall Painting Is Up For Auction For $4 Million

Over the past eight years, its price has doubled.
The auction houses Christie’s and Sotheby’s have announced their first fall auctions of contemporary art. As is traditional, the lots include several works by the artist from Vitebsk Marc Chagall. The most expensive of these is expected to fetch more than $4 million. Its value has doubled in nearly eight years, according to Office Life.
The painting in question is “Peasants.” Marc Chagall painted it in 1971. At that time, the artist was living in the southeastern French commune of Saint-Paul-de-Vence with his second wife Valentina Brodskaya.
In the painting, Chagall depicted images typical of his work. At the center of the composition are two lovers. Unlike in his other works, they are not embracing here: the man is looking not at his beloved, but at the rooftops of the city. Perhaps the artist, no longer young, wanted to show that he missed his childhood home.
This painting will be offered for sale on September 28 during the evening auction of contemporary and modern art at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong. According to the high estimate, the work is valued at over $4 million.
The current owner purchased the painting in November 2018 at a Christie’s auction. He paid $1.93 million for it. At the time, it sold for $560,000 less than its high estimate of $2.5 million.
Another work by Marc Chagall will be sold the following day, September 29, at a contemporary art auction hosted by Sotheby’s, also in Hong Kong. The low estimate for this distinctive 1950 still life is $570,000.
A third work by Chagall will also be sold in Hong Kong. This time, on September 30, during a 20th-century art auction at Christie’s Hong Kong. The high estimate for the artist’s circus-themed painting is $700,000.
