The former chairman of the Supreme Council represented Belarus at the celebration of the 440th anniversary of the Union of Lublin.

Replygood that Dr Shushkevich is still active in Belarus-after his abortive first attempt at political office in the newly formed Belarus years ago.. He seems to be a voice of reason-a scientific person- who has managed to survive in the Lukashenka nightmare in Belarus. It is extremly difficult for an academic-especially a democratic person- to survive in this repressive society in Belarus-and I liken Dr Shushevich to Sakarov in Russia years ago. While the analogy is not perfect, both are nuclear physicists-and both are now classed as dissidents in dictatorships. Dr Shushkevich has remained in his home country-to be voice against a dictatorship-and I commend him for his stance.
