Russian President Vladimir Putin is pursuing not only the defeat of Ukraine, but also a long-term confrontation with the West.

This was stated by the head of the Department of State Security of Lithuania Darius Jauniškis, Delfi reports.

According to him, Russia's war against Ukraine will remain the most important factor that will shape the security agenda of the region. This includes Lithuania. Jauniškis predicts that the situation is likely to remain the same - as it was last year. What he considers unlikely is that Russia's aggression, its goals and strategies will change this year.

"Certainly, we don't see any preconditions for a conflict freeze or resolution, any desire on the part of Putin, his administration in this direction," Darius Jauniškis said.

He notes that Putin's goal is the defeat of Ukraine, "denazification" and "demilitarisation", control over the occupied territories, but not only that. The head of the Lithuanian State Security Department believes that Moscow is getting ready for a long-term confrontation with the West, it has a wide range of tools.

Jauniškis does not rule out that the Kremlin will use these tools to reduce aid to Ukraine, use information and cyber operations, nuclear blackmail, and incidents on the territories of NATO countries are not excluded.

We remind you that the German edition of Bild reported about secret documents from Berlin describing a hypothetical scenario of preparations for a possible future conflict between NATO and Russia. According to the document, the Alliance expects escalation from the Russian Federation as early as February this year.
