Budapest is ready for a compromise.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that Budapest is ready for a compromise of 50 billion euros for Ukraine, subject to an annual vote on extending the funding.
In an interview with the French Le Point, he explained that Hungary does not agree with the amendments to the EU budget, nor with the fact that the EU should provide Ukraine with 50 billion euros, which, according to Orbán, is a “huge amount.” Also, Budapest is not ready to “sign up” to allocating these funds to Ukraine every four years.
“But let it be this: Hungary is ready to participate in the twenty-seven decision if they guarantee that every year we will decide whether we will continue to send this money or not,” Orbán said.
The Hungarian Prime Minister also noted that the annual decision to extend assistance to Ukraine “must be unanimous.” He also complained that his demand was being interpreted by some EU member states as an attempt at blackmail.
