The Latvian Migration Board has demanded from 841 Russian citizens to leave the country until October 13. This was announced by the head of the department Maira Roze in a report by Latvian television LTV, writes lsm.lv.
The reason was changes in immigration legislation adopted in the fall of 2022 in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The amendments adopted then oblige Russian citizens to prove their knowledge of Latvian at A2 level. In 2023, 46% of participants passed the exam, while the rest were given two more years to prepare.
In addition to those Russians who must leave Latvia by mid-October, about two thousand Russian citizens must urgently retake the exam by the end of September, otherwise they too may be deported from the country.
