NATO has begun its annual exercises to defend the alliance's territory using nuclear weapons, known as "Steadfast Noon." This was reported by n-tv, citing a spokesperson for NATO’s military headquarters in Mons, Belgium.
Service members from 17 countries will participate in the exercises, which will last until October 23. Germany has deployed three Tornado fighter-bombers from the 33rd Tactical Air Wing to the Aviano Air Base in northern Italy. According to the German Air Force, several dozen German military personnel are participating in the exercises.
German Tornado jets are normally based in Büchel in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. According to n-tv, U.S. nuclear weapons are stored there, which German aircraft could deploy if necessary as part of NATO’s nuclear sharing program.
The alliance has not disclosed details or the scenario of the current exercises. NATO has only stated that the scale of the exercises is comparable to last year’s maneuvers, which involved about 2,000 military personnel and more than 70 aircraft, including F-35 fighters, reconnaissance aircraft, and refueling aircraft. During such exercises, military personnel practice transporting nuclear munitions from underground storage facilities to aircraft and mounting them on fighter jets. Only training bombs without nuclear warheads are used in these exercises.
