Ukraine Was Elected To The UN Human Rights Council

For the next three years.

Ukraine has been elected to the UN Human Rights Council for the next term—2027–2029.

This was announced on October 13 by Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga on his X page.

According to him, Ukraine’s candidacy was supported for membership on the UN Human Rights Council for the next three years.

“I thank all UN member states that supported Ukraine’s candidacy. Ukraine is joining the Council while continuing to defend its people and its sovereignty against Russia’s aggression, which has led to serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law,” Sibiga wrote.

As a member of the UN Human Rights Council, according to Sibiga, Ukraine will prioritize holding Russia accountable for its violations, support international mechanisms for documenting and investigating them, and advocate for the protection of prisoners of war. In addition, the Ukrainian government will continue its efforts to secure the return of Ukrainian children who have been deported or forcibly displaced by the Russian Federation.

“Drawing on our own experience, we will work with partners to strengthen accountability, protect human dignity, reinforce the international human rights architecture, and counter new challenges to human rights around the world,” Sibiga wrote.

According to the organization’s rules, membership on the UN Human Rights Council lasts three years, after which states may be elected for another term. Ukraine has served on the UN Human Rights Council for four terms: 2006–2008, 2008–2011, 2018–2020, and 2021–2023.
