Mercedes Will Release A Compact G-Wagen

A scaled-down version of the legendary SUV is aimed at a new audience.

Mercedes-Benz is developing smaller gasoline-powered and electric versions of the G-Class SUV, which are set to hit the market within the next two years. The new model will retain the recognizable design and off-road capabilities of the larger G-Wagen, but will be aimed at a different audience, according to Motor1.

“We’ll make sure the small G-Class targets a different audience,” said Mercedes-AMG CEO Stefan Weckbach.

According to Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius, the car is expected to debut in less than 24 months. This suggests a possible debut by 2028.

The compact SUV won’t be a scaled-down version of the original. The company promises to retain the distinctive features of the G-Class family and ensure good off-road capabilities; however, the new model will not be aimed at those who opt for the full-size G-Wagen.

Versions with both internal combustion engines and electric powertrains are expected. Possible options include a turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine and an all-wheel-drive electric vehicle with two motors. The final technical specifications have not yet been disclosed.
According to the publication, Mercedes is also considering the possibility of manufacturing the new model in Hungary rather than at the German plant where the full-size G-Class is assembled.
