A Powerful Earthquake Struck China

16 people were killed, and dozens were injured.

A powerful 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck China on Thursday, October 22. At least 16 people are known to have died, and dozens were injured.

More than 300 homes were destroyed, and the extent of the damage is still being assessed. CNN

provides further details.

What is known

According to Chinese state news agencies, a powerful earthquake struck Tibet on October 22.

The epicenter of the quake was located 183 kilometers east-northeast of the city of Nagqu in the Tibet region.

The Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported that at least 339 houses collapsed, and the extent of the damage is still being assessed.

Rescue teams have been dispatched to the epicenter of the earthquake, and rail service has been suspended in the affected areas.

China’s Earthquake Administration has activated a Level II emergency response—the second-highest level—according to the Chinese television channel CGTN.

In villages near the epicenter, authorities found at least two injured people and houses with visible cracks.

In total, at least 16 people were killed, and dozens were injured.

According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, the average elevation within a 5-kilometer radius of the epicenter exceeds 4,800 meters.

“China is no stranger to powerful earthquakes, especially in the southwestern parts of the country, where the Eurasian tectonic plate meets the Indian plate, leading to a dramatic collision that has formed the mighty Himalayas and the vast Tibetan Plateau. Thursday’s earthquake occurred about two months after a catastrophic flood on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau near the border with Nepal, caused by a massive glacier collapse and landslide. “As a result of this flood, at least 1,300 people were killed and more than 5,000 were reported missing,” CNN reported.

The last major earthquake (7.1 on the Richter scale) in China occurred in January 2024, killing three people and injuring dozens.

Shortly before that, in December 2023, China experienced its deadliest earthquake in a decade, which claimed the lives of more than 100 people.
