Reuters: Xi Jinping Refused To Meet With Kim Jong-un

The North Korean dictator was greeted by the fourth-highest-ranking official in the Chinese hierarchy.

North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un paid a visit to China, but did not meet personally with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

According to Reuters reports, Kim arrived in the Chinese border city of Dandong; during the visit, he was accompanied by Wang Huning—the fourth-highest-ranking official in the Chinese leadership. It is noted that Wang conveyed “greetings” from Xi Jinping to the North Korean leader.

Kim Jong-un arrived in Dandong via a new bridge across the Yalu River, connecting North Korea and China. The opening of this bridge earlier this month was further evidence of warming relations between Beijing and Pyongyang.

China remains Pyongyang’s main economic and diplomatic partner; China accounts for the bulk of North Korea’s official trade.

And although many analysts believe that North Korea’s deepening military cooperation with Russia could make Pyongyang less dependent on Beijing, Kim Jong-un’s visit nevertheless signals a resumption of efforts by China and North Korea to strengthen economic ties.

Footage of the visit broadcast by Chinese state media shows Kim Jong-un walking across a bridge toward North Korea, with people waving flags lining his path.

In addition, Kim Jong-un visited a memorial dedicated to the Korean War in Dandong, as well as an automobile factory.

Kim Jong-un’s last known visit to China took place in September 2025: he arrived in Beijing to participate in the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, during which he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping. In June of that same year, Xi Jinping made a state visit to North Korea.
