An Unexpected Secret To Human Happiness Has Been Revealed

All this time, he was right in front of us.

A new study has shown that pet owners who spend more time with their pets are more likely to be in a good mood.

Humans and cats have lived side by side for millennia, and over that time, our pets have earned a reputation for being aloof and self-absorbed. However, in a recent study, scientists uncovered an unexpected path to human happiness—cats, according to the Daily Mail.

Researchers from Kyoto University found that time spent with a cat can significantly improve a person’s mood and overall well-being. However, experts warn that simply having a cat in the house isn’t enough to experience this “happiness effect.” The results suggest that the length of time spent living with a pet isn’t as important as the quality of that time.

According to the study’s lead author, cat expert Dr. Saho Takagi, she and her colleagues found that time spent with a cat in everyday life is associated with higher levels of vitality in the owner.

It should be noted that while many pet owners are ready to confirm that cats truly change their lives for the better, the scientific evidence on this matter is quite contradictory. Moreover, some studies suggest that owning a cat may, on the contrary, increase the owner’s stress.

During the study, the researchers observed the daily lives of 29 cats and their 19 owners for a month. Small Bluetooth trackers were attached to the cats’ collars, allowing researchers to accurately measure how much time the animals spent near their owners. At the same time, the owners were asked to fill out questionnaires to assess changes in their mood over the course of the month.

Another finding is that the longer a person lives with a cat, the higher their levels of negative mood. Although this is merely a correlation, it suggests that simply owning a cat may not be enough to yield health benefits. The researchers concluded that the quality of the interaction plays a key role in this regard.

The researchers also sought to determine whether there is a deeper emotional bond between cats and humans at the biological level. To test whether this reputation is justified, the researchers measured the levels of the hormones cortisol and oxytocin in cats and their owners. The results may seem surprising, but they reveal a close correlation between the hormone levels in cats and their owners.
