War is not an unfamiliar topic for the First Lady of the United States.
U.S. First Lady Melania Trump may continue to mediate between Ukraine and Russia following the agreement on a ceasefire to allow for a humanitarian operation in the occupied town of Oleshky in the Kherson region. Under the agreement, Russia and Ukraine must organize humanitarian missions in the region’s settlements at least once a month. This was reported on Wednesday, October 28, by Fox News citing a senior adviser to the First Lady Mark Beckman.
According to the publication, for several weeks, Melania Trump has been negotiating with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to deliver aid to 2,000 civilians trapped in Oleshky. As a result, she managed to gain the trust of both governments and become their “sole mediator.” Fox News emphasizes that her diplomatic efforts in this regard are not yet complete.
The current agreement called for representatives of the two countries to meet in Belarus last week to coordinate a detailed plan for the humanitarian operation. It is intended to ensure the delivery of food, clean water, medicine, and doctors to Oleshky, as well as safe passage for residents wishing to leave the city.
Fox News obtained pages of the agreement bearing signatures from Russia’s Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova and her Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Lubinets, dated October 23. The documents also provide for further humanitarian operations in the region under the coordination of the first lady: regular aid deliveries and repatriation efforts in settlements across the Kherson region.
As the publication notes, for the First Lady, who was born in Slovenia, the war in her native Europe was not an entirely unfamiliar topic: she had previously served as a mediator in the return of Ukrainian children to their families. However, negotiations to end hostilities marked a significant expansion of her role.
