An American Satellite Has Revealed A Secret Chinese Spaceplane

An American commercial satellite photographed a secret Chinese spaceplane resembling the U.S. Space Force’s X-37B military spacecraft. At the same time, U.S. intelligence warned that by the end of the decade, China could deploy directed-energy weapons in space capable of disabling satellites, according to Ars Technica.

The photograph, taken in 2024, shows the spaceplane’s wings, cargo bay doors, heat shield, and solar panels. The image was included in a declassified report by the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Intelligence Agency on space threats.

China has been testing such vehicles since 2020. During this time, four missions lasting up to nine months have taken place. The spaceplane is capable of deploying small satellites, capturing objects in orbit, and returning to Earth for reuse.

According to an analysis of orbital observations by astrophysicist Jonathan McDowell, the current Chinese spacecraft deployed a small satellite in June 2026 and retrieved it in July. It repeated this operation in August and September.
Satellite observations are important not only for studying space technologies. They help provide independent information about states’ activities even when official information is classified.

The report also states that China is developing laser weapons capable of blinding or damaging satellites. According to U.S. intelligence estimates, Beijing could develop directed-energy space systems by the end of the decade.
