London will provide funding as part of "emergency military funding for this winter."
British Finance Minister John Healy presented a draft budget on Wednesday and announced that London will provide Ukraine with an additional 10 billion pounds ($13.3 billion) in economic and military aid. This will help partially make up for Kyiv’s funding shortfall, which is estimated at 70 billion euros (nearly $78 billion) for next year.
Healy told members of Parliament that the new funds will be “provided in the form of loans, export finance guarantees,” as well as “urgent military funding for this winter” totaling 500 million pounds ($665 million), according to Reuters. A government spokesperson clarified that the 500 million pounds will cover “urgent air defense needs.”
Of the total amount, 7 billion pounds will be allocated as economic aid over the next three years, and 3 billion pounds will be used to ensure export deliveries to Ukraine. According to Healy, he and Prime Minister Andy Burnham informed Volodymyr Zelenskyy of the aid package. “He told us, ‘You’ve made my day,’” the finance minister said.
According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, which tracks aid provided to Ukraine, the United Kingdom has allocated 22.8 billion euros ($25.3 billion), or 0.86% of GDP, through August 2026. This amount includes 16.2 billion euros in military aid, 5.2 billion in financial aid, and nearly 1.5 billion in humanitarian aid. In terms of total support, the UK ranks fourth among Ukraine’s allies; in terms of military aid, it ranks third behind the U.S. and Germany.
EU countries provide the bulk of the aid. They are concerned that Ukraine’s other partners have not yet allocated sufficient funds for next year. London’s contribution will help partially close this gap.
