Steinmeier Called On China To Exert Influence On Russia
Frank-Walter Steinmeier

The German president gave a speech at Peking University.

German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called on China, as a member of the UN Security Council, to make efforts to compel Russia to end the war against Ukraine.

He stated during a speech at Peking University.

“China is a permanent member of the UN Security Council and maintains close relations with Russia. Therefore, let us work together to ensure that Russia stops its attacks and begins serious negotiations,” Steinmeier noted.

He emphasized that after nearly five years of war—longer than World War I—after hundreds of thousands of deaths, and after daily attacks on heating systems, infrastructure, water and electricity supplies—especially now, as winter approaches—people are longing for an end to their suffering.

“They rightly expect that we, using our various capabilities but acting together, will make efforts toward this end,” the German president added.

Steinmeier noted that China’s interests are also at stake.

“As a major economic and trading power, your country depends on conflicts not turning into permanent blockades. If shipping through sea lanes such as the Black Sea, the Strait of Hormuz, or the Bab el-Mandeb Strait is threatened, supply chains, energy supplies, and food security around the world are put at risk. “The longer these conflicts last, the weaker the entire global economy becomes—and with it, one of its largest economies: China,” he explained.
