Zyuganov: Russia Could Slip Back Into The '90s

Russia's top communist wants to fill the Russian Federation's budget with contributions from Russians.

A proposal to use Russian citizens’ bank deposits to replenish the federal budget, which is being depleted by the war, has once again been raised in the Russian State Duma, according to “Dialog”.

The leader of the Russian Communists, Gennady Zyuganov, made this statement in parliament. In June, the head of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (CPRF) had already made a similar appeal, but party officials later claimed that their leader had allegedly been misunderstood.

This time, Zyuganov pointed out that Russian banks hold 130 trillion rubles deposited by Russian citizens and organizations. According to his calculations, this is equivalent to three federal budgets.

“If you look at the money that both citizens and organizations have deposited in banks—another 130 trillion rubles—that’s three more budgets. You have five budgets right on your desk, and you can’t allocate the money?” said the head of the Communist Party of the Russian Federation.

He also called for raising taxes on the ultra-wealthy and “taking” $700 billion from Russian billionaires.

In addition, Zyuganov noted a decline in investment in the Russian economy and warned that Russia could thus “plunge back into the 1990s.”

“Without investment, there are no miracles,” – added Russia’s top Communist.

Zyuganov also highlighted the decline in 11 industrial sectors, particularly in metallurgy, and noted that one-third of Russian enterprises have become unprofitable.

In addition, the CPRF leader pointed out that Russia ranks as low as 82nd in the world in terms of GDP per capita and is hopelessly losing the space race to the U.S. and China.

“This year, the U.S. has had 129 launches (of rockets into space—ed.), China has had 72, and we have had 13,” he added.
