Belarusians Held Commemorative Events On “The Night Of The Executed Poets”

A protest in Vilnius drew hundreds of people.

On Thursday, Belarusians around the world held events to commemorate the writers and cultural figures who were killed during the Stalinist repressions.

In Vilnius, a memorial event called “The Night of the Executed Poets”—which began in 2017 in Kuropaty—took place. About 200 people gathered to honor the memory of the victims of Stalinist repression. Poems by repressed Belarusian poets were recited in the park near the Museum of Occupation and the Struggle for Freedom.

Speakers included former political prisoners, the Belarusian theater group VARTA, and one of the signatories of the Act of Restoration of Lithuania’s Independence Emanuilis Zingeris, reports "Radio Svaboda".

A memorial rally was held in Białystok outside the Belarusian consulate.
