Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, was hit by cyberattacks—hackers stole $6.3 billion worth of assets. Behind the largest hack in the history of the cryptocurrency market is the elite North Korean group TraderTraitor, which operates with the support of the North Korean government.
This was reported by CNN. The findings are confirmed by a report from the analytics firm TRM Labs, published by Reuters.
According to the researchers, the attack is linked to the elite hacking group TraderTraitor, which is controlled by Pyongyang.
Experts express a high degree of confidence in these conclusions, based on a combination of on-chain and off-chain data.
“TRM attributes the attack to TraderTraitor, an elite North Korean hacking unit, based on reliable intelligence both on and off the network. We make this determination with a high degree of confidence,” the report states.
During this large-scale incident, the attackers managed to drain digital assets across 10 different blockchain networks totaling approximately $6.36 billion. The majority of the funds were transferred in just 20 minutes.
The primary attack vector was the compromise of the exchange’s hot wallet signing infrastructure.
Although Tether, Circle, and other market participants managed to quickly freeze approximately $2.7 billion in stablecoins and tokens, more than $2.4 billion in BTC and ETH—which cannot be frozen—remains under the hackers’ control.
Binance has temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals while the incident is under investigation. The exchange is also cooperating with law enforcement agencies and blockchain analysts to track down and recover the stolen assets.
The company stated that it will cover all losses using its own SAFU emergency insurance fund and the exchange’s own funds.
