Sharp disagreements arose at the negotiating table.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, speaking at a meeting of G20 foreign ministers in Atlanta (U.S.) on October 30, showed no signs of softening the Kremlin’s stance toward Kyiv. This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas, as reported on October 31 by AFP on October 31.
According to the publication, sharp disagreements arose at the negotiating table. Kallas accused Lavrov of lying about the war in Ukraine. According to her, he “put forward many lies, many false narratives, which the Europeans were able to reject.”
European officials also sought to increase pressure on Moscow, specifically to get Russia to agree to a ceasefire in the Black Sea.
Lavrov, according to a European diplomatic source who spoke to AFP, behaved “quite provocatively.” At a press conference, he criticized the Europeans for their “arrogant boycott,” while praising the willingness of U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration to engage with Moscow.
According to AFP sources, this year the joint photo session of G20 ministers was canceled because some European officials objected to Lavrov’s presence. According to a U.S. official, the photo was canceled so that “the ceremonial photo session would not turn into a diplomatic distraction.”
In addition, European leaders decided not to be photographed with Russian delegations at other G20 meetings this year.
