The complex is being built 37 km from the Polish border.
Construction of a massive radar station is nearing completion in the Kaliningrad Region; it could enable the Russian military to detect aircraft, missiles, and ships at distances of up to 3,000 km. A significant portion of Europe, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Ukraine, could fall within its range, according to Deutsche Welle.
The complex is being built near Gwardejsk, 37 km from the border with Poland. Satellite images from ICEYE show three rows of antennas, each over 500 meters long. The site is surrounded by a double fence. According to the Polish publication Defence24, construction began in March 2023, and the radar in question may be similar to the 29B6 “Container” system. It operates in the shortwave band and uses radio wave reflections from the ionosphere, which allows it to detect objects beyond line of sight. According to statements by the Russian military, “Container” is capable of simultaneously tracking up to 10,000 air targets, including F-35 aircraft.
Lithuanian Armed Forces Reserve Colonel Vaidotas Malinionis said that the new radar could give the Russian command additional time to make decisions in the event of a conflict with NATO. The intelligence gathered using this radar could also be used in the preparation of offensive operations. According to Malinionis, the radar’s enormous size makes it an easy target for an attack. Latvian military analyst Evija Dyatkovich believes that the radar will also help the Russian military detect low-flying objects, including drones. In her opinion, this could reduce the effectiveness of drone use by NATO countries.
Another large ring-shaped radar with a diameter of more than 1,600 meters is under construction near Chernyakhovsk in the Kaliningrad region, according to Defence24. Construction on this facility also began in March 2023. The publication speculates that the two facilities may be linked, but the purpose of the second complex remains unknown. In total, there are more than 20 electronic intelligence and countermeasures facilities in the region.
Russia will be ready to use “all available” weapons, including nuclear ones, in response to an attack by the West, stated Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. According to Malinionis, Russia could deploy up to 100 nuclear warheads in the region. High-ranking sources in Poland and Lithuania believe that some of them are already in the Kaliningrad region, The Times reported.
