A new natural gas field with estimated reserves of about 5.7 billion cubic meters has been discovered in the Mediterranean Sea. Egyptian authorities hope that these reserves will help address the domestic fuel shortage and reduce spending on foreign purchases, according to Euronews.

A 15-meter-thick gas-bearing layer was discovered during drilling of the “Nasim-1X” exploratory well in the Taiba offshore block. Reserves are estimated at 200 billion cubic feet—that’s about 5.7 billion cubic meters of gas. By way of comparison, that’s roughly the same amount consumed by the entire industrial sector of a small European country in a year.

Drilling was carried out by the Egyptian company Petrobel in partnership with Italy’s Eni and Australia’s Woodside. Experts are still determining the exact daily production volumes, so the start date for deliveries is not yet known. To avoid spending years building infrastructure from scratch, it was decided to connect the well directly to the existing network: to do this, a 22-kilometer pipeline will be laid to the existing main gas pipeline.

The Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum noted that new investments, along with the government’s efforts to repay old debts to foreign energy companies, helped achieve this result, prompting those companies to once again invest in exploring for deposits off the Egyptian coast. Prior to this, foreign experts had been reluctant to conduct exploration due to non-payment, and domestic production in the country had declined sharply. As a result, Egypt had to purchase expensive fuel abroad to supply power plants and industrial facilities. That is why domestic gas is now vital for Cairo.
