Putin wants to divert attention away from Ukraine.
The German Foreign Ministry accused Russia of helping Iran to identify potential targets for strikes. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful told reporters at the G7 meeting in France, writes The Guardian.
Wadeful said that in this way Russian dictator Vladimir Putin hopes to use the war in Iran as a distraction from his attack on Ukraine.
The minister also noted that he had spoken with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and outlined to him Germany's position on its willingness to participate in stabilizing the situation in the Strait of Hormuz after the fighting ends.
"Putin cynically hopes that the escalation in the Middle East will divert our attention from his crimes in Ukraine," Vadeful said.
He stressed that this calculation should not work.
"We see very clearly how closely intertwined these two conflicts are. Russia is obviously supporting Iran with information about potential targets," he added."
