To reduce dependence on the US.
One of Ukraine's leading arms manufacturers Fire Point has launched two satellites this year and plans to launch dozens more in 2027. The Financial Times reported this on May 14, citing the company's co-founder and chief designer Denis Shtilerman.
Ukraine is seeking to reduce its dependence on the U.S. government and Western technology companies, the publication noted. According to Stilerman, Fire Point is expanding production of cruise and ballistic missiles and developing a "pan-European air defense shield." The company sells "not only weapons and not only security, but independence in security," he said.
Media writes that the impetus for Ukraine to strengthen its own developments was the 2025 conflict between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office, after which Washington suspended intelligence sharing with Kiev for a week. The Ukrainian army's dependence on the Starlink satellite system, which Russia has used to guide drones, was also cited as a vulnerability.
Stilerman said that the company's Ukrainian drones and missiles, which are cheaper than their Western counterparts, have already attracted the interest of European governments. In particular, Germany is considering joint projects with Ukraine in the field of long-range drones, air defense and electronic warfare.
